Meemure is a tiny isolated hamlet that sits beneath the mysterious Lakegala Mountain and this solitary gem got its name from the surrounding Mee trees. It is located 324 metres above sea level, and sits beneath the steep slopes of the Hunnasgiriya Mountain and the Knuckles Mountain Range.
The path to finding Meemure is not easy, and involves a tricky and laborious trail of 33 kilometres, which is mainly motivated by stunning views. Blanketing evergreen forests paired with the rushing sound of water boosts one’s sprits and gives you that extra push to reach your destination.
Majestic waterfalls including Ravana Ella cascade down the mountains around Meemure. The biodiversity is rich and abundant since it is sustained by fresh water and a flourishing environment. From birds, beasts and amphibians to fish, the rich vegetation is home to an array of endemic and endangered species.
Bullock carts were the only form of transport for villagers in the past. But since modern technology invaded this remote site and transformed it into a tourist attraction, dirt paths were widened to bring in autorickshaws, jeeps and mini-trucks to transport goods and visitors. Life in Meemure is quiet and basic. Villagers build their eco-friendly homes with clay and grass, and a unique feature seen here are the quartz boundary walls. Meemure is surrounded by paddy fields and pepper cultivation. And the toddy and treacle produced here are treats that the villagers are quite proud of.
