It’s Monstastic!

Try not to pick sides in the biggest monster movie ever made

The MonsterVerse is at a precipice – it’s no longer about humans running away from monsters but about monster vs monster action with humans rallying at either end.

So the plot unfolds with Apex Cybernetics being intent on finding an ancient power source in Hollow Earth – the home of the monsters located way below the surface. Apex is monitored by Titan conspiracy theory podcaster Bernie and joined by Madison (daughter of Mark Russell from Godzilla: King of the Monsters).

Apex recruits former Monarch scientist Nathan for the Hollow Earth quest, who loops in Team Kong because apparently it’s Kong who can guide them. After an epic kaiju fight in the middle of the sea where Godzilla defeats Kong, they find Hollow Earth. Kong discovers his ancestral throne and takes possession of a glowing axe made from the same power source that Apex is after.

Sensing Kong beneath the Earth, Godzilla drills a shaft to the throne room with his atomic breath. Team Kong fly up the shaft and Kong is once again defeated. Enter Apex’s secret monster that’s powered by Hollow Earth energy – Mechagodzilla – and Godzilla is quickly overthrown.

Nathan revives the unconscious Kong, and ape and reptile join forces against the machine monstrosity. With a little help from Madison’s friend Josh who pours liquor on Mechagodzilla’s control centre, the monsters emerge victorious!

The movie, which grossed US$ 423 million worldwide, combines sci-fi, drama, suspense, conspiracy, lots of visual effects and action sequences. Although the human angle is weak, there are many ‘Kong-Jia’ moments that will warm your heart.

It also reflects fight scenes from the 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla and has references to Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). But you needn’t have watched the previous films to enjoy and understand this one.

Godzilla vs. Kong is monster-packed with action and you’ll find it hard to pick a side!

Who will win – the mighty ape or the prehistoric sea monster? While #TeamKong and #TeamGodzilla support their own monster in this epic battle, a third squad emerges. It’s more powerful and destructive than any titan – Mechagodzilla, which is a telepathically controlled monster robot.
