Y2K Pop Culture

The aesthetic, futuristic and tech-loving fashion form of the late 1990s and early 2000s is back for a second round.

Gen Z has brought back many things from the past and one that’s most incredible is the take up of fashion from the 2000s. Y2K, referring to the year 2000, is a distinct style influenced by pop culture and technological breakthroughs. Yet, this fashion didn’t reemerge without modern upgrades with newer and a more polished look added to its style.

This generation is adopting all the iconic cyberpunk, techno utopia and techno dystopian aesthetics from science fiction such as The Matrix and Mean Girls. In addition to metallic finishes on apparel, Generation Z is also looking at velour tracksuits and bizarre hues such as chartreuse green and bubble gum pink.

Gen Z values sustainability and social change more than previous generations, and they tend to buy used items with the 90s aesthetics.

Singers from Korean lineups such as TXT, K-Pop and Blackpink’s rebirth in the year 2000, and the music video ‘Pink Venom’ are true icons of the Y2K generation.

Gen Z is the driving force behind Y2K fashion as a rebirth and experience of a new era from 1999. With exposed technology, more fluidity, and the hopeful and tremendous love of fashion, Y2K is here to stay.
